Parisians Love to Speak English, was an audio work for the Diep-Haven Cross Channel Contemporary Arts Festival in 2014. Using the public address system onboard the ferry between Diep and New Haven, I created a series of announcements which asks us to consider how we, the public, assume and transfer knowledge of other cultures.

During the journey between New Haven and it’s maritime border the announcements explored stereotypes of “The French”, while during the journey between the French maritime border and its mainland the announcements explored “The British”, thus when the ferry crossed the maritime border, and the announcements were switched to talk about the other culture, the work marked the invisible maritime border which delimits the territory. The announcements were played in both English and French.
